LYV Tournament

Tournament Dates:

The LYV tournament is a single-elimination event, meaning that winning teams will advance while losing teams are out. This site will have links to division schedules as they become available. Please note that while the tournament dates of 10/28 and 10/29 are final, the division times will be announced prior to the event. Any updates will be communicated immediately.
*The High School Boys Division will have a separate playoff date.  The date, ranking, and format will be announced as soon as it is published*

Tournament Format:

THIS FOLLOWING BULLETS ARE VERY IMPORTANT (pulled from the highlighted portions of the text below):

  • The format for tournament play is different from the regular season. LYV uses match play for the tournament where the best 2-out-of-3 wins.

  • The first two sets are to 25 points. The third and deciding set is to 15 points and played only if necessary.

  • Teams must always win by 2 points. There is NO scoring cap.

  • All sets start at 0-0 for every division.

  • There is NO time limit on any match.

  • Teams will remain on the same side of the court for the entire match.

Tournament Information:

Every team in every division of LYV participates in the post-season tournament. Open Divisions will be cross seeded for the final tournament. House Divisions will be cross seeded for the final tournament.

Every team will be assigned a seed number. Final seedings will be based on regular-season won-lost records. In the event of any ties, point differentials will determine seed.

The tournament is single elimination: lose a match and you are eliminated. There is no chance for re-entry, there is no losers bracket. Winners keep advancing.

Teams should arrive at the Virginia Volleyball Center as instructed by their coach. The coin flip prior to Game #1 will determine who serves first for sets 1 and 2. If a third set is necessary, a coin flip to determine who serves first for game #3 will be done prior to game #3.

Timed warm-ups will be 10 minutes in length. This will use the 5-5 warm-up that was used during the regular season. The team serving first in-game #1 will then have sole possession of the entire court for 5 minutes followed by the other team having sole possession for 5 minutes.

Teams will remain on the same side of the court for the entire match.

Tournament Directors have the authority to alter start times as long as both teams/coaches and the assigned referee are present.

Tournament Directors are in charge of the competition and can be identified by a Tournament Director shirt. Team Coaches should always check in with the Tournament Director upon arrival to check in their team. Teams that have lost should check out with the Tournament Director to ensure there are no additional work assignments for the team. Teams who have won should check in with the Tournament Director prior to confirm their next match start time.

Playing time and substitution rules for the tournament are the same as the regular season rules for each division.

Spectators:

All matches will be held at the Virginia Volleyball Center (VVC). Tickets are required for all spectators over the age of 12 and are purchased by donation. This is necessary in order to provide the appropriate amount of staff and to ensure the safety of the players and coaches. These tickets will be available for purchase online once your team's schedule is available.
